There's a lesson here for us all: A third of healthcare orgs in Sophos survey 'hit with ransomware in 2020'

What’s the remedy? Read on…

Promo The thought of ransomware gripping the corporate systems we manage is enough to give any of us sleepless nights. The thought of a ransomware attack crippling the healthcare infrastructure all of us rely on is terrifying.

But the high-profile nature of attacks on this sector, and the ways in which healthcare organizations deal with them, have lessons for us all, which is why you should peruse Sophos’ report on The State of Ransomware in Healthcare 2021.

Based on a survey of 328 healthcare IT managers in mid-sized organizations across the globe, the report reveals that just over a third of their healthcare organizations (34 percent) were hit by ransomware last year.

In nearly two thirds of attacks, the cybercriminals successfully encrypted data — a higher “success” rate than the global average.

The report also details the costs of all this, with the average healthcare ransomware payment coming in at $131,304. While this is eye-watering, it is among the lowest by sector.

While healthcare organizations often see lower budgets to overcome these challenges, those that do invest in specialist staff and data recovery plans – including backup – are confident they can avoid such attacks in future.

So, whether you’re responsible for protecting healthcare systems against ransomware and other cyber threats, or you’re interested in learning how this most crucial of sectors navigates the threat, download your copy of The State of Ransomware in Healthcare 2021.
