Big dogs get new ride-share service from Singaporean giant Grab

What a time to be alive

Singapore’s dominant ride-sharing app Grab has added a service for large dogs, or humans who own large numbers of dogs.

The company, which bought Uber’s local operations, has seen close to 170 percent growth over the last two years for its current “GrabPet” service that offers to carry two humans, “two small to medium-sized pets, or one large pet”.

The new GrabPet XL will schlep three human passengers and three small to medium-sized pets (up to 41cm in length), or two large pets (41cm in length or more).

Birds aren’t allowed, but other creatures are welcome.

The company promises “foldable pet seat covers and adjustable leashes to ensure the pets’ comfort and safety during their ride”. The service even offers insurance during the ride.

While the service may seem frivolous, The Register’s Singapore-based contingent points out that very few locals own a car or dwell in houses with backyards, that dog-friendly parks aren’t plentiful, and that many local taxi drivers don’t like carrying canines and won’t accept bookings if they know a four-legged friend is coming along for the ride.

The insurance isn’t frivolous either: Grab is trying to grow a financial services arm, and is acclimating customers to the idea by offering 30 cent personal accident polices that offer $S100,000 (US$75,000) payouts over and above basic cover included with every ride, plus a $S5 credit if a driver arrives ten minutes late.

GrabPet XL fares have a $S16 (US$16) floor, plus about US$0.60 a km. ®
