Technoking of comedy? Elon Musk to host Saturday Night Live

Yes that was a Betteridge headline (badoom, tish)

Long-running US skit show Saturday Night Live has once again courted controversy by inviting Technoking Elon Musk on to host.

SNL announced the pick via Twitter on Saturday to be confirmed the following day by teleprompter-hater His Muskiness himself who then quipped: "Let's find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is."

Although Musk's faithful believe anything he touches is gold, the decision appears to have confused others.

Variety's Jenelle Riley was quoted in The Guardian as saying: "I am really beyond disappointed in SNL. They've learned nothing. A host should have some discernible talent other than… being rich? Or at least not be someone who lies about a takeover, spreads misinformation about a pandemic, and is known for abusing employees."

It depends on how you define "talent". While Musk started down his gold-paved career as Technoking by flogging startups like Zip2 and PayPal, he also leads electric car maker Tesla and rocketeer SpaceX. The latter two in particular have whipped up a cult-like frenzy around the businessman.

However, bar some cameos in The Simpsons and Iron Man 2, an actor he is not. And if the SNL host isn't an actor with a new film to hawk, the results are mixed – just cop a load of this cringe-inducing performance from Donald Trump in 2015.

But that isn't to say Musk won't have material to draw on. He could, for example, call everyone a pedo. Or he could smoke a spliff on stage – although it has already been done by Cypress Hill. Also, to be fair to the guy, his introduction of Tesla's Cybertruck concept was hilarious.

And while he's far from charismatic, it's not like he doesn't have a sense of humour. Here's Musk creasing at a deer who fell in a swimming pool and drowned.

So we wait with bated breath to see if Musk's performance will dock with the International Space Station or bellyflop like a Starship. ®
