Are your homegrown business apps as secure, fast and usable as they could be?

Brush up on your RESTful, gRPC, container development skills with us online

Webcast Building an application from the ground up for your business has never been quicker or easier. With REST for web services leading to the RESTful architectural style, and containers proving the perfect delivery model, the combination of DevOps, microservices, and automation means an organization can create almost anything, instantly.

All this convenience leads to faster release cycles to meet user demand for updates and new features, and development teams able to work more independently to meet those cycles. All this is good news. However, such developmental streamlining come at a potential security cost, with machine-readable security contracts now often being replaced by RPC systems for speed and simplicity.

Google’s gRPC is one good example – an efficient way to call a method on a server application of a different machine as if it were a local object. However, what can result is the emergence of a security blind spot in an otherwise fast, cheap, and efficient development and release cycle.

This is the topic that’ll be tackled in our next webcast, as The Register’s APAC editor Simon Sharwood is joined by two experts from application services firm F5 Networks.

The session will kick off at 1130 SGT on August 26, 2020. F5’s Ravi Vagadia and Shahnawaz Backer, along with Simon, will explore how organisations can get all the advantages and benefits of developing and running modern applications with hybrid coding languages and toolsets, without encountering the kind of security oversights typically associated with this style of development.

The panel’s conversation will focus on how businesses can keep the development of manageable, modern applications as secure as possible. Topics will include choosing the right protocol – ie: between RESTful or gRPC – how to proxy gRPC for security visibility, and how to introduce the open-source Nginx Unit to create a dynamic web application server, in order to run applications with a reduced level of burden for multiple languages and multiple application servers.
