Cloud-tailored Swift, RING jobs... Give it a REST, Scality. Oh good

It looks like you have

Object storage startup Scality has added OpenStack Swift and block storage access to its RING storage software through a REST interface.

Swift, for the uninitiated, is OpenStack's object storage interface.

"Scality is serious about OpenStack. We have realised that it's more than open-source software, it is an interoperable framework where commercial software like Scality definitely has a place," CEO Jérôme Lecat told The Register.

"Swift is really both an API and an open-source software-defined storage backend - similarly to S3 being both an API and a cloud storage service. Scality now supports the Swift API ... We are also announcing the first customer using this API."

A business called Numergy is using Scality's OpenStack Swift connector in its OpenStack cloud, available to customers in France and elsewhere in western Europe.

Lecat added: "We also designed – and we are contributing as open source – a REST block driver that allows any block-based application to use any object store as long as it is CDMI compliant. LANL [Los Alamos National Laboratory] intends to use the REST block driver to deploy hundred-plus PB file systems. We are very proud of this innovation, and proud to be contributing to the open-source community."

The REST block driver software runs on Linux servers, and it exposes a block device to apps using a REST-based, CDMI-compliant transport to backend storage. It supports block storage connectivity to Scality's RING through OpenStack Nova and KVM.

LANL division leader Gary Grider said: "The ability to share block devices without the need for a Fibre Channel SAN, using REST/HTTP on 10+ Gigabit Ethernet/InfiniBand technology, is an important building block for us."

You can talk about the Swift connector and see the REST block driver at Scality's booth, number E25, at the OpenStack summit event in Paris, running from November 3 to 7. ®
