Ahhhhh! What year is it?! Users left without direction or clue after Google Calendar 404s

Hint: The pub is that way >>>

Updated Google Calendar has gone TITSUP* with no sign given as to when it should be unborked.

If only it had some sort of reminder or schedule for that... oh, wait.

Both the app and website version of the popular tool have gone down with little explanation other than a "stay tuned for updates" and a sad little semi-circle of suffering on the G Suite status page.

In an unfortunate turn of events, the previous emission from the G Suite orifice was one plugging, er, Calendar. Well, scheduling is certainly simpler when you can't actually do it.

The search giant is currently referring to the issue as a "service disruption", although the predictable howling on social media tells a different story.

The issue looks to have kicked off at around 3pm BST with hotspots showing in Europe, Asia and the East Coast of the US. Unless the Chocolate Factory's engineers can deal with the problem soon, the great freeing-from-schedules will make its way over to the West Coast in the coming hours.

According to Google, "affected users are unable to access Google Calendar", and that is certainly the experience of this hack. Cached data was initially there, but a foolhardy refresh resulted in the browser reporting a stern "Calendar could not load the data. Please try reloading later."

"Affected users" appears to include biz users of the company enterprise-targeted G Suite as well as consumers.

One Register reader, Nathan Zook, observed: "Projected productivity for the day: high."

Liberated from the tyranny of scheduling, appointments and meetings, users have found themselves floundering, although at least one appears to have got the right idea.

May we suggest the swift purchase of a paper calendar, with the word "PUB" scrawled over it as a suitable backup device.

We've naturally contacted Google to find out how long the wobble will last and what caused it. No response as yet – we suspect the gang is a little busy.

In the meantime, be careful out there.

Thanks to the many, many Register readers for reminding us that we don't know what we should be doing next. ®

Updated to add at 1729 BST

Google contacted us following publication of this story to direct us to its GSuite status dashboard that confirms the Calendar app remains down and out for the count. An update is expected at 17.40BST.

Final update

"The problem with Google Calendar should be resolved," Team Google reported at 1813 BST. "We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support. Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better."
