Teradata decides: If you can't beat 'em, flog your analytics platform as a service in the cloud

It's a pay-as-you-go world

Teradata – the American hardware and software maker traditionally associated with reassuringly expensive, sprawling data storage and analytics systems – continues to slowly wrap its arm around the cloud.

The company spewed three announcements at the Teradata Universe knees-up in Madrid, and all of them relate to delivering its Vantage analytics platform (formerly Teradata Analytics Platform) as a service.

Vantage is now available as a service on AWS, Microsoft Azure, Teradata Cloud and on-premises. Vantage Machine Learning and Graph engine products will be available as a service later this year.

For starters, Teradata now allows customers to deploy Vantage in their own data centres, using the IntelliBase and IntelliFlex boxes – and to pay for the privilege on a monthly basis. In this instance, Teradata is to be responsible for remotely monitoring and managing the environment.

A Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS) functionality using AWS infrastructure to keep a cloud copy of the customer's on-premises box is another fresh feature being slung into the cloud.

AWS is the first supported public cloud vendor for Terradata's DRaaS, but Teradata expects to extend this functionality to Azure before the end of the year.

Last and some may say least, Teradata has added Vantage and its components to the AWS Marketplace – this is a virtualized version of the product and doesn't require the customer to have a physcial box.

Teradata's core business is data warehousing: it sells specialised database computers, the size of a fridge, with its NewSQL Engine software on board – based on a patented parallel processing architecture. Such systems collect and store all types of enterprise data. ®
