Malware-flinger stingers, indexing and ever-changing data access patterns

Roll up, roll up for an end-of-holiday storage roundup

Three (and a half) storage newsbytes rounded off 2018 with Acronis donating malware detection to a free Google service, Panzura talking about hybrid cloud file indexing services, and CTERA using AWS's S3 tiering.

Acronis gets anti-malware brownie points

Data protector Acronis's malware detection engine, Acronis PE Analyzer, has been integrated into Google's free online VirusTotal service.

It examines files and URLs to facilitate the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and other kinds of malicious content.

Acronis said the engine is capable of detecting any kind of Windows PE malware using machine learning models.

It and some other file checkers can be found here. An enterprise version of VirusTotal can be found here.

Acronis's machine learning model is based on a Gradient Boosting Decision Tree combined with several neural network models, which creates a file "portrait" of these threats based on various static characteristics. Acronis said the ML-based detection model can work independently, without an internet connection, and provides a high detection rate over time without regular updating.

The engine was developed as a component of a new cyber protection suite that Acronis plans to release in 2019.

Panzura sets date for SaaS

File sync 'n' sharer Panzura said its Vizion.ai file finder and indexer SaaS application would be generally available from 1 January 2019.

It claimed Vizion.ai delivers a single, unified view of data across the enterprise and provides powerful search, analysis, recovery, and control of multi-cloud data for greater productivity, operational intelligence, improved security, and reduced storage costs.

The service features:

  • Virtual consolidation of all metadata into a single, unified view for indexing, search, analysis, and control of unstructured data,
  • Search and analytics functions powered by Vizion.ai's hyperscale, multi-cloud data engine,
  • Machine learning for predictive analytics to help lower costs based on data access patterns and performance/cost analysis of cloud storage locations,
  • Open API allowing third-party developers to take advantage of Vizion.ai's data engine to build new apps,
  • Marketplace including both Panzura and third-party applications and plugins that provide visibility and control over an organisation's data.

The Vizion.ai Base Service is priced at $300/TB per year of data indexed and provides full access to the platform's search, analytics, and policy-control engine.

The Vizion.ai Premium Service is priced at $300/TB per year for data indexed, $60/user per year, and includes the Base Service plus Active Directory Federated Services (ADFS) enabling end users to search and restore their data according to permissions defined in Active Directory.

CTERA supports AWS Intelligent S3 tiering

File services supplier CTERA said it now supports AWS's S3 Intelligent-Tiering. This automatically moves data between the frequent access and infrequent access tiers when access patterns change. AWS said it's good for data with unknown or changing access patterns.

Aron Brand, CTERA's CTO, said: "We estimate Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering to reduce our typical customer's S3 bill by approximately 23 per cent."

It's only SME

Storage Made Easy (SME) announced it has strengthened its File Fabric multi-cloud product with document watermarking policies. The feature enables administrators to set policies at a storage or folder level to protect documents with watermarks. ®
