AWS looks to add 'bill collector' to its list of cloud offerings

Amazon offers to handle payments for third-party SaaS devs

Amazon Web Services has opened a store that will allow customers to purchase additional software-as-a-service products and pay with their monthly AWS bill.

The cloud giant says that the AWS Marketplace Vendors program will let cloud customers buy the additional services as needed, paying for time or data used rather than as a recurring cost.

Those products are then billed to the customer as part of their monthly AWS account charge, with Amazon passing the balance for the SaaS services over to the developer.

AWS did not say whether it would take a cut of the revenues as a service charge.

"The new SaaS solutions run on AWS infrastructure and you will pay only for the service that you consume, with no monthly fees or subscription costs," wrote AWS evangelist Jeff Barr.

"For example, you can buy security services on a per-host basis, log processing on a per-GB-ingested basis, geocoding on a per-request basis, or caching on a per-GB-cached basis. Usage charge for the services that you consume will appear on your AWS bill."

For developers, AWS believes the service will help reduce the time and complexity of managing accounts and services, while for customers the option of adding SaaS services and paying a la carte by the amount of time used or data handled by the service will increase uptake of third-party services.

Amazon says that the new SaaS services can be purchased through the AWS Marketplace.

Additionally, AWS says it will be opening up its QuickSight analytics tool to all users, moving the BI service out of its test phase and into general availability.

Unveiled in 2015, the QuickSight service allows AWS customers to analyse big data content generated by their AWS instances and then export that data for use alongside other analytics tools (including Excel and Salesforce).

Amazon says the QuickSight service will be available at a cost of $9.00 per user. ®
