Maxta goes Freemium and enlarges VP count with new hires

Full-featured software comes with no support, and node count and capacity restrictions

Determined to stand clear of the noise in the hyper-converged market and forge itself a distinctive identity, Maxta has announced a freemium business model for its MxSP hyper-converged software.

It has also extended its exec count with two VP hires and an internal promotion, envisaging surging growth.

  • Herb Schneider, VP engineering – ex-EVP engineering at Nebula, cofounder GridIron, cofounder and VP at Extreme Networks.
  • Mitch Seigle, VP marketing – ex-VP marketing and product management at Syncsort, VP corporate marketing at LSI, senior director for corporate marketing at Engenio.
  • Kiran Sreenivasamurthy is promoted from senior director for product management and marketing to VP for product management.

The freemium software is full-featured, uses the same MxSP code base, and is not a feature-slugged version. It is freely downloadable in the USA and EMEA geographies, comes with no support, and is limited to 3 nodes and a maximum of 24TB of capacity across them.

Because it is full-featured, there will be a seamless transition to any production-level, paid-for license.

The aim is to greatly widen the exposure of Maxta's software to customers and make it much easier for them to evaluate a software hyper-converged approach, distinctively easier to check out than an appliance approach. No payment is needed for a start.

Any customers downloading the software become self-qualifying leads for Maxta's channel. Any then buying support become even stronger leads and both kinds of customer should, other things being equal, be more receptive to outbound marketing initiatives.

VP Marketing Mitch Seigle said, "We looked at the market and asked how can we shake it up? ... Changing our business model will make people stand up and take notice ... This is the first freemium hyper-converged model."

Maxta has also moved to new and larger offices in Santa Clara and is hiring for positions around the globe. The hyper-converged market tide is rising fast and lifting Maxta's boat. ®
