Actifio adds replication tool to its data copy Swiss army knife

Everyone has to be everything these days

Actifio has added replication to its copy data management software, calling it StreamSnap.

StreamSnap is provided as part of Actifio's Copy Data Virtualization platform, which takes a copy of master data and can then generate virtualized copies for test and dev, protection, etc, thus saving the storage space needed for physical copies. The replication tech uses this technology to squirt a virtualized data copy to a remote site for disaster recovery-type purposes.

The pitch is that other replication schemes, at storage array or application level for example, may not copy data so fast and so often, or recover it so quickly, meaning a longer interruption to a business' processing and operations. With StreamSnap, Actifio says Recovery Point Objectives can be as low as 60 minutes.

Actifio bangs its StreamSnap drum about these points:

  • Data access anywhere, any time, quickly,
  • Infrastructure agnostic - works regardless of the underlying storage technology, in hybrid cloud, private data centre or public cloud environments.
  • Throttling controls - for the fastest off-site data availability that network bandwidth will permit.

Actifio claims StreamSnap and its Resiliency Director provides the widest range of RTO and RPO options in the industry. It says it's making it easier and more cost-effective for customers to back up, recover, and use their data whenever and wherever they want.

Slowly copy data management, data protection, and data security are coming together in data management suites. Best of breed suppliers in each area are expanding sideways to increase the usefulness of their products, expand their selling surfaces, and meet the challenge of storage silo-converging startups. ®
