Virgin bins Webspace, tells customers they can cry to GoDaddy

And after 12 months you can pay for that too

Virgin Media is to put its legacy hosting biz Webspace out to pasture, after taking over the service via its acquisition of NTL back in 2006.

"As more of our customers are choosing to use alternative apps and services, we've decided to stop offering Webspace from 28th April," Virgin informed customers in a letter seen by The Register.

"Webspace closes on 28th April, but there's something even better in store for you. We've teamed up with GoDaddy® – a world-leader in Domain Names, Websites and Web Hosting - to bring you 12 months' free hosting services, plus a free website builder, domain name and professional email," it said.

After a year customers will have to pay the £60 subscription themselves.

"Remember – you'll need to save the content from your website before 28 April to avoid losing anything," the missive cheerily warned.

But some customers were less keen on the deal.

"Virgin Media have sent letters out saying they will drop all their customer web sites replaced by GoDaddy, which seems to be a template driven scripted site and not suitable for more complicated," one customer told The Register.

Another said: "The death warrant is slated for 28th April 2016, so there is not much time left for those affected to move their domains elsewhere if they want to avoid being financially punished."

The Register has contacted Webspace for a comment. ®
