CFEngine goes from beta to full product in just a month

Non-LTS, so no enterprise support though

CFEngine has wrapped up testing on its release of version 3.8.0 and pushed it out over the weekend, less than a month after releasing the beta.

The config management developer said the latest version included “numerous new features for the policy language", highlighting http support with the url_get() function, body inheritance, and support for persistent classes through the module protocol.

It also promised significant performance improvements for storage access, due to the dumping of some unnecessary log files, and the upgrading of packaged dependencies to their latest versions. Bugfixes for the stable, fully supported CFEngine 3.7.2, released just last week, have also been incorporated into 3.8.0.

3.8.0 is a non-long term support version. CFEngine switched to a time-based release schedule earlier this year. LTS versions of the platform - starting with 3.7 this year - are released every 18 months and are then maintained for three years. The next LTS version will be 3.10, due in 2017. Which like Christmas, and the end of beta programs, will come round sooner than you think.

The non-LTS versions are supported for just six months, and don’t qualify for enterprise professional support.

The beta was released last month, when CFEngine said the final version would be due in January 2016.
