OFFICIAL: Zuck's BIG in-your-face Facebook Messenger SHOVE finally pays off

App overtakes YouTube – now second most popular in US

Facebook's Messenger – which readers may recall was ingloriously shoved down the throats of the free content ad network's users – has been crowned the second most popular app, slinking past Google's YouTube.

That's according to the latest comScore numbers, which ranked the top 15 smartphone apps based on Stateside market share on iOS and Android devices.

Facebook raked in 73.3 per cent of app users, followed by Facebook Messenger with 59.5 per cent, while YouTube slipped to third position with an audience reach of 59.3 per cent.

Google dominated the list with five of its apps in the list, however.

Facebook upset plenty of its users when it decided to turn its messaging service into a stand-alone app back in 2011.

As of August last year, the Mark Zuckerberg-run company killed the ability for holdouts to use the messaging feature on mobile versions of Facebook, thereby forcing folk to download its Messenger app.

And, holy Zuck, that strategy appears to have paid off. ®
