Brit-educated bloke takes Dept of Homeland Security's infosec reins

Cambridge graduate Andy Ozment teams up with one-time HP gros fromage

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has appointed Andy Ozment, currently the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Cybersecurity and Communications – the DHS's main processing center for threat information sharing – as leader of its cybersecurity centre.

Ozment will remain in his current assistant role, while assuming control of the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC), now elevated within the DHS. The NCCIC has been without a recognised head for several months.

Ozment will report directly to the DHS agency chief, as announced by the big boss, the US Secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh C. Johnson.

Ozment holds a doctorate in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and has held previous roles at the NSA, as well as working as a Director for Cybersecurity on the National Security Council at the White House.

He was one of the lead investigators of the OPM breach earlier this year, and notably moaned that almost a quarter of the office's networks were unable to handle two-factor authentication.

Assisting Ozment in the NCCIC's work will be John Felker, formerly the Director of Cyber and Intelligence Strategy for HP Enterprise Services. Felker will run day-to-day operations at the NCCIC.

Security Secretary Johnson stated that the two "will provide a combination of operational experience, leadership, and strategic insight needed to take the NCCIC to the next level for our cybersecurity." ®
