My Passport Grip Pack blooms with new colours … and more storage

Are black and white colours? Answers on a postcard please

WD has refreshed its My Passport line of portable disk drives with fetching Grip Packs — colourful edge protective bands providing a big jump from 2TB to 3TB max capacity.

The seventh generation of My Passports offer 500GB, 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities.

The PC version, My Passport Ultra, comes in four colours — blue, dark red, white and black — which WD call Noble Blue, Wild Berry, Brilliant White and Classic Black. My Passport for Macs are in black only; they were previously silver grey only.

The silver-grey colour has in fact been dropped from the My Passport Ultra range.

The Grip Packs come in four (five to be picky) colours to; pink, light blue, mauve and two shades of grey, not fifty. The WD names for these colours are fuschia, sky, grape, smoke and slate.

WD says the Grip Pack accessory is for the My Passport Ultra model, and includes a colour-matched 18-inch flat USB 3.0 cable; looks like Mac users don’t get colourful condoms either.

With Mac notebooks being silver, grey or gold in colour Mac users may feel let down by WD.

The drives have hardware 256-bit encryption, with a user key needed to access their content. WD Backup software is included with the drives.

We wait to see if other My Passport drives, such as the wireless products, and the Thunderbolt-connected ones, Studio, and Air, also get the capacity upgrade and fetching colourful Grip Pack condomry.

These drives come with a three-year warranty and can be bought online from WD (wdstore.co.uk for example) and etailers like Amazon.

Suggested retail prices start at $79.99 (£59.00) to $199.00 (£159.00) depending on capacity. The 3TB model is available next month.

WD Grip Pack accessories will be available in June and will have an MSRP of $12.99 (£9.99). ®
