Sony grovels, offers freebies after PlayStation network spent Xmas TITSUP

Games giant rolls over, starts the year on its knees

Sony has offered free membership and discounts to its console gamers after the PlayStation Network fell off the interwebs for several days over Christmas.

The troubled entertainment giant said it would offer those whose free trial of PlayStation Plus was interrupted by the outages five more free days, while all PlayStation owners would get a 10 per cent discount on games, themes and other stuff bought through the network.

Sony would not say when it would be handing out the discount codes, but users should expect to receive the coupons some time this month.

"Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience by offering all PlayStation Plus members that had an active membership or free trial on December 25th a membership extension of five days," Sony said in announcing the offer.

The games giant was hit with outages multiple times during the month of December. The company's PlayStation Network was blown offline by DDoS-crew Lizard Squad.

Later, the console maker fell victim to a technical glitch impacting users of its PlayStation 4 console. The issue left many unable to connect to the PlayStation Network at the tail end of the year.

The PSN has long been a target for miscreants critical of Sony. In 2011, the company was the target of a hacking effort that ended in millions of exposed accounts, and an outage of more than three weeks for the network. ®
