The Shock of the New: The Register redesign update 1

Bug reports and mouseover mercy

Site news This is going well … just letting you know that we are listening to your feedback on the redesign.

And also reminding you that this design is the first major change to the site in six years. Hence the Shock of the New is that little bit shockier. However, 90 per cent of the work in this redesign comprises changes under the hood that allow us to test and roll out iterations very quickly.

A quick update for now - we’ll come back to you next week with a fuller response.

1. We have introduced a half-second delay before the mouseover triggers the drop down navbar. Let's hope this eliminates those annoying accidental pop-ups.

2. Readers have reported two bugs - we have fixed one already, restoring the ability to switch between desktop and mobile versions. The second, more annoying, bug - namely the loss of right click to open new tabs - affects IE8 + IE9 users only, we think* - just under six per cent of our readers. We know how to fix this, although it's a tiresome kludge - and it’s on our to do list. We’ll get it out before the end of next week.

3. On the loss of the print icon - rarely used, not coming back - and bemoaned by a couple of readers. We still support this feature and you are welcome to get hacking.
