South Londoner wins Reddit MILLIONAIRE not-a-lottery lottery

Exact amount dependent on other users’ generosity

An anonymous South Londoner has been named as the winner of a pseudo lottery designed to (hopefully) make one Reddit user a millionaire.

A Redditor who goes under the name Emphursis was picked from the posters at a sub-Reddit called Millionaire Makers. Other forum folk have been asked to each pledge one dollar to him, in the hope that he will be made a millionaire.

The winner has just opened a post titled "crossing my fingers worked" and other Reddit users have already begun giving him small donations using PayPal, a tipping service called Changetip and cryptocurrencies including Dogecoin and Bitcoin.

So what will he buy with the proceeds? A jetski, he hinted, although there are "not many places to use one in southern England".

Emphursis wrote: "I was half awake in bed and I thought I'd have a quick look at Reddit ... to be greeted by all this! I'm blown away, it still hasn't really registered.

"What am I going to do with anything that's donated? I'll definitely be making some donations to charity, to help give children in deprived areas a brighter Christmas. Beyond that, I've not really thought about it.

"I've also seen a couple of posts saying this was in some way rigged. That was not the case, I was fast asleep while all this was happening," he added.

The idea was dreamed up by a poster on the Reddit thread Shower Thoughts, which invites posters to give details of random ideas.

Six days ago, a forum dweller wrote: "If a million of us picked a certain Redditor and all donated just $1, we would have the power to make someone a millionaire."

The winner was decided by the mods of the Millionaire sub-Reddit, who used a random number generator to pick out which poster would get the cash.

We have written to the user Emphursis to ask him how he feels about the win, but he has not yet responded. We tracked back through his previous posts on Reddit and other forums to find that he lived in South London.

Sadly for Mr Emphursis, his future wealth is dependant on how many donations he receives. We will keep an eye on the thread and let you know how he gets on.
