Google Calendar jumps into Inbox/Gmail era

Rewrites app for mobile-first era

Google's refreshed its Google Calendar Android app, and is promising an iOS version to follow.

The big-ticket item on the list is that the Calendar will suck stuff out of your e-mails, so (in the limited imagination of those that provide real-world use-cases) an airline confirmation would be spotted in your inbox and would create the relevant calendar entry without you having to do anything.

Currently supported on Android 5.0, with 4.1+ versions to arrive in the coming weeks via a Play update, the Gmail/Inbox-integrated Calendar could also keep track of the flight so Calendar would tell you if the flight was delayed. That way, you can start your fuming in the taxi on the way to the airport, rather than in the false but reassuring delusion that your day's going smoothly.

The Chocolate Factory has also decided that the calendar needs to be presented in a pretty box, so you won't just be presented with events. “Calendar’s new Schedule view includes photos and maps of the places you’re going, cityscapes of travel destinations, and illustrations of everyday events.”

Last of all, it's added predictive guessery, called Assists, to help work out what you're trying to enter in to the app manually and make suggestions.
