AWS Zocalo squares up to box Box, Dropbox, sync 'n' share flocks

Even VMware's having a go at the successor to enterprise content management

Enterprise sync 'n' share appears an unlikely battleground for a rolling brawl between startups and enterprise titans, but that's what's happening out there today.

We've already seen some action today in the form of Dropbox matching Google and Microsoft's storage prices.

Not to be outdone, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also thrown a punch by announcing that its Zocalo service is now generally available. Pricing remains the same, at US$5.00 a month for 200 gigabytes of cloudy storage goodness. AWS has also baked the API-call-logging CloudTrail service into Zocalo, which the security conscious will appreciate.

But that's not all the action in the field, as this week VMware baked AirWatch's Secure Content Locker (SCL) into its new Workspace Suite, a collection of tools to manage mobile devices and the enterprise assets they can reach.

VMware doesn't quite have an explanation for why it is keeping SCL alive when fellow EMC Federation member Syncplicity has plenty of overlap. Syncplicity, meanwhile, is quietly letting it be known it has scored a 125,000-seat win somewhere in the USA because the client appreciated its security features. Syncplicity is also big on integration with other business apps and so, ultimately, is SCL now that it is part of a suite dedicated to making mobile devices better citizens on those occasions they reach through the firewall.

Dropbox and Box are already making similar noises. Which is why there's so much activity in this space: players hope share 'n' sync will succeed where enterprise content management failed to launch.

Google, AWS, Microsoft, EMC, VMware and others aren't just looking to make a few bucks here and there on cloud storage. Instead they're hoping low, low, prices give them a chance to tie their storage into your workflows.

Which is why you'll hear plenty more about share 'n' sync in coming months as players move beyond price to discuss new features they hope will add value to the commodity that is curated cloud storage plus clever clients. ®
