Vulturization: Who'd be a sysadmin today?

Trevor and Phoummala chat to Nutanix's Dwayne Lessner about hype, Hyper-V and more

Podcast The Register presents the second installment of the Vulturization podcast series – listen here or from the player below.

This time, your inordinately caffeinated host sits down with Dwayne Lessner of Nutanix and veteran sysadmin Phoummala Schmitt to talk about converged infrastructure, marketing hype, and the ever-increasing demands placed on modern IT professionals.

Register Vulturization: Podcast 2

At last year's VMWorld, Nutanix was perceived as a little company making a big marketing noise. Less than a year later, its rapid growth has me asking the question: "Can we really call Nutanix a startup anymore?"

Our panelists also weigh in on what makes a great trade show booth – of particular relevance with this year's VMworld just around the corner – and chat about the marketing wars in the storage industry.

We also discuss the worlds of storage and virtualization as they relate to Microsoft. Nutanix started supporting Hyper-V late in 2013, and at Tech Ed North America this year, it announced Azure integration. Phoummala Schmitt has years of experience working in primarily Microsoft environments, so we seize the opportunity to tackle some big questions.

Has the Microsoft ecosystem stagnated? Can the arrival of new server SAN vendors rejuvenate it? Can Microsoft get away from Hyper-V's previously lackluster image now that Hyper-V is finally competitive with VMware?

And in the broader world of IT: sysadmins are increasingly being asked to do more with less. Simplicity is consequently become a selling point in the storage industry. How can you balance the need for a streamlined solution with the need to have infrastructure flexible enough to keep meeting your needs several years from now – including the ones you don't know you have? ®
