SanDisk offers Cloudspeed flash options for pockets deep and shallow

SanDisk has revved its CloudSpeed SATA SSD line, adding a tad more random read speed, slowing down the random write speed and reducing the sequential read and write speeds a trifle, too.

These are business/enterprise SSDs in a 2.5-inch form factor product line that SanDisk acquired when it bought SMART Storage. There were then two products, the 1000 and 1000E, E standing for endurance, and both using 19nm NAND.

That has not changed but we now have four products in the range: the Extreme, Ultra, Ascend and Eco in order of declining speed and endurance.

They are meant for write-intensive (Extreme), mixed read and write use (Ultra), and read-intensive (Ascend and Eco) environments.

The prior CloudSpeed 1000 units did up to 35,000 random write IOPS, and 500MB/sec sequential reads and writes, so you can see how the performance has been cut back slightly.

With the new range we have a wide range of endurance, with the Eco having a 1.051 petabytes written rating over its life time, the Ascend 1.752 PBW, the Ultra 4.38 PBW and the Extreme 14.6 PBW.

The full Drive Writes per Day (DWPD) ratings vary nicely too; being 1, 1, 3 and 10 respectively. SAnDisk is pleased with that 10 DWPD rating for the Extreme, saying it is "the first vendor to ship 10 full drive writes per day (DWPD), 19nm-based enterprise SATA SSDs".

The products are sampling now and will be available around the middle of the second quarter of this year through SanDisk's channel. ®
