Australian teams burn up the road on solar car race

Four of five locals remain in the hunt for glory

World Solar Challenge Video Four of Australia's five teams in the World Solar Challenge are still rolling towards Adelaide.

Australia's leading contender is Team Arrow, which is now in seventh position among the Challenger class. The University of New South Wales' Sunswift is running second in the Cruiser class. Both spent last night somewhere south of Alice Springs.

Two other teams, Aurora and Solace, spent the night in the town where Vulture South caught up with them for some slightly ropey video chats you can see below.

We start with team Aurora, which is using an older car as is common in the Adventure Class. Older doesn't mean slower: the Aurora set the fastest-ever time trial lap of Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway back in 2009 and is still pretty much the same car it was back then.

Next up is the University of Western Sydney's team, which derides rival University of New South Wales' entry as a car for “soccer moms”.

Australia's fifth team, TAFE SA's Solar Spirit, has been trailered but continues to compete and made it to Alice Springs last night having covered 851 of the possible 1493 kilometres of the route. ®
