Nokia quiz: Do you know what a phablet is?

Phondleslabs: You've never really talked about them...

Gadget blogs and tech specialists may know what "phablet" means, but Nokia isn’t whether civilians do.

The phone-maker took the unusual step on Friday of gaining feedback on the word. Nokia was measuring familiarity with the word and how favourably it is received. The company has yet to launch its first "phablet" but is about to change that – with pictures of a device with a 6-inch display already washing around the web.

The category refers to touchscreen phones with a 5.5-inch or larger diagonal display. Samsung's Galaxy Note is credited with taking the device beyond the gadget nerd niche – they’re surprisingly popular with women – who are more likely to have the appropriate accessories already to hand. And whenever your reporter sees a huddle of Somalian women, they’re invariably comparing notes on a gigantic supersized phone.

A quick poll of Register staff suggests that "phablet" should perish along with "mobe", while the correct term to use for this device category is in fact "phondleslab". ®
