LG making thin screens possibly FOR THE NEW iPHONE

New touchscreens churned out for mysterious 'customer'

LG Display has fuelled rumours of the imminent arrival of the iPhone 5 as its CEO announced the production on a new, thinner display.

The new screens will have built-in touch sensors, components widely speculated to be involved in the latest Jesus mobe.

Chief exec Han Sang Beom told reporters in South Korea that work had started on the new displays and its schedule was in line with the "customer's" product release plans, according to Reuters, Bloomberg and others.

"We just began mass production and we don't expect any disruption in supplies," he said late yesterday.

Naturally, Han didn't make any mention of Apple who its customer is.

The new kind of display puts touch sensors directly into the screen instead of adding them as a separate layer, which allows the display and therefore devices to be thinner.

The next iPhone is expected to be launched on 12 September and persistent rumours have pointed to a design overhaul that would make the mobe thinner and give it a larger screen.

But pundits have also speculated that the new design will lead to shortages because the shiny new displays are harder to make, which could slow up the production line and/or lead to more defective screens in each batch that have to be replaced. ®
