Most organisations just not ready for Cloud: Computacenter

Despite 'Cloudwash' just 28% will migrate loads this year

The majority of organisations do not have the infrastructure backbone to move wholesale to the cloud, according to a report by Computacenter.

The services-based reseller took small steps into cloud provision earlier this year with the launch of C3 mail and has since added collaboration and virtual desktop solutions.

But research of more than 200 IT decision makers at the Cloud Computing World Forum revealed the "polarised state of virtualisation" among IT estates, with one-fifth claiming to have no form of system virtualisation while others are virtualised to the hilt.

The priority for half of those polled confirmed that getting their IT infrastructure cloud-ready was a priority for the year.

"Most organisations do view cloud computing as a major focus for their business, but many corporate infrastructures are simply not ready – nor may they ever be – for a full-scale switch to cloud computing," said Andrew Vize, CC propositions and strategy director.

"The majority of companies are still focused on becoming 'cloud-ready' and virtualising infrastructure, ensuring that systems are prepared for cloud before making the leap," he added.

Nearly three-quarters planned to test cloud functions this year with just 28 per cent planning on migrating workloads.

The busy schedule facing IT bods – managing multiple projects including networking, unified comms, DR and security – was hogging the agenda and a minority claimed this was preventing them from looking at cloud migration of indeed becoming cloud-ready.

"We have seen a number of organisations asking for off-premise Infrastructure-as-a-Service solutions, and a number forging ahead with 'full' cloud and virtualisation projects," said Vize.

"However, this approach is coupled with a good understanding of the need for caution and due diligence, and after the sheer volume of 'cloudwash' and hype we will undoubtedly now see a number of well thought-out, productive and effective cloud uses." ®
