Microsoft goes double bubble with server beta releases

One for the cloud, and one for home

Microsoft slung out a brace of server betas yesterday for its home and cloud biz customers.

A preview of the company’s small business server, codenamed Aurora, was made available for testers to download on Monday.

Redmond described the cloud-based Aurora as “a significant departure” from its “traditional on premises version” of Microsoft Windows server products for SMBs.

“Aurora will be Microsoft’s first server to deliver both on premises and cloud computing capabilities for small businesses,” it said.

Separately the software maker pushed out another beta of its Windows Home Server product yesterday, which Microsoft has codenamed Vail. It released the first preview build of the software in April this year.

The operating system will come loaded with extended media streaming outside the home or office, carry multi-PC backup and restore, and feature an easier setup process and expanded development and customisation tools for Microsoft partners.

Additionally, it now comes with the ability to backup Mac OS X machines.

The Aurora beta can be downloaded here, and the latest Vail preview build can be grabbed here. ®
