LoTR maker Jackson knighted in NZ

Lord of the Rings maker Peter Jackson has been knighted in his native New Zealand, the BBC reports.

The honour comes as the country reinstates knighthoods following their abolition back in 2000. Sir Peter, already made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit back in 2002, has "continued to excel in and significantly contribute to the New Zealand film industry", according to the citation for his knighthood.

The filmmaker described the announcement as an "incredible moment", and enthused: "I didn't think anything would surpass the 2004 Academy Awards, but I was wrong. The feeling of gratitude and pride I have in accepting this honour from my home country is profound."

Back in Blighty, meanwhile, Star Trek thesp Patrick Stewart has also attracted a knighthood in the New Year Honours for his "services to drama".

He said he was "very proud", adding: "This is an honour that embraces those actors, directors and creative teams who have in these recent years helped fill my life with inspiration, companionship and sheer fun." ®
