Chelsio imitates LeftHand Networks

Launches new USS enterprise

Ten gig E comms supplier Chelsio has moved up-stack and is producing software to turn a host server's direct-attached storage into a SAN or NAS resource, copying HP'S LeftHand Networks software.

The software, called USS for Unified Storage Software, runs in an x86 server and turns its storage into a networked iSCSI block or NAS file access resource. This goes one better than LeftHand Networks, which concentrates on SAN access. Like the LeftHand software, Chelsio's USS product can run as a virtual machine in an ESX server. It re-maps the captive direct-attached storage of the server into a SAN, available for the balance of guest operating systems to use.

USS provides standard storage management features such as replication, backup, snapshots, and volume management. It can be remotely managed using a Web-based user interface, providing centralised control of processes such as backups, restores and upgrades.

USS runs on most Ethernet adapters, but Chelsio says it will run faster on its hardware, which turns on iSCSI data integrity as well. The middleware integrates into VAR’s and OEM’s hardware platforms, and Chelsio has certified a number of server platforms for USS operation which include: IBM x3650; IBM x3650-M2; HP DL-180; Apple XServ Z0FR; SuperMicro SC386Tq; Dell 2950; and Tyan S2895. It has also certified a variety of adapters and peripherals. For the full list, visit www.chelsio.com.

Kianoosh Naghshineh, Chelsio's president and CEO, said this product gives VARS and OEMs serving the small and medium enterprise market a feasible way to produce low-cost iSCSI and NAS boxes. ®
