The payouts received by the civil servants who took the blame for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs losing the child benefit database have been revealed.

Paul Gray departed from his job in November 2007 as the the child benefit database loss story broke and took a lump sum of £137,591. He also receives monthly payments totaling £49,292 until he is 60 - in August 2008. He should retire with a pension pot worth a little more than £2m.

Stuart Cruikshank, chief finance officer at the Rev, left in March 2008 and is taking £88,125 with him.

It has emerged since that one reason for Gray's departure was that management structures were such a mess that no one else could be found to be responsible for the large data loss. Except politicians of course. Crichel Down anyone?
