Nintendo said to be readying replacement for 3DS

The eyes have it

Nintendo may be preparing a 3DS revision that plays down the handheld's ability to display games and media in 3D.

So says French-language website 01net, citing the outpourings of an unnamed Nintendo employee, who claimed the move has been prompted by parental fears that the 3DS' screen will mess with their nippers' eyes - and the impact that is having on 3DS sales.

Nintendo has long warned parents not to leave a 3DS - reviewed here - in the hands of kids under the age of seven.

The new DS would retain the 3D capability of the 3DS, presumably for backward compatibility, but would be presented more as a connected gaming device - the better, that suggests, to also combat Sony's PS Vita, due, like the 3DS replacement, next year.

The 3DS has embroiled Nintendo in a row over 3D patents. Sales have been unimpressive, forcing a 30 per cent price cut to be made last month. ®
