Apple said to be sampling Samsung, LG iPad 'retina' screens

Pixel testing in progress?

Evidence that a future iPad - possibly even the next one - will feature a 2048 x 1536 display is growing.

Apple is sampling screens of that resolution from Samsung and LG, the Korea Times claims, with a view to using them in the iPad 3.

Testing will be completed in Q3, the KT source said, which suggests the "retina display" iPad won't be out until Q4 and possibly not until Q1 2012, which is what we've separately heard from one of our industry sources.

Unsurprisingly, Apple, Samsung and LG are not saying anything about screens.

Rumours that Apple wants to up the iPad's display resolution have been seeping through the internet since the start of the year, initially in relation to the iPad 2.

When that model shipped with a 1024 x 768 panel, speculation shifted to the iPad 3.

Don't forget, though, it has also been claimed the next iPad will sport a 3D screen, not necessarily a retina panel. ®
