Tesco heralds 2011 as YEAR OF ANDROID

Grocery customers favour 'droid over iPhone

Tesco is now selling more Android smartphones than iPhones.

Before Christmas 2010, iPhones were outselling Google-powered products two to one, the grocer's mobile phone seller said today. But sales of the two platforms reached parity in January.

Then, last month, Android took the lead.

A problem for Apple? Not entirely. Tesco's Android offerings are cheaper than the iPhone, so it's no wonder punters choose them. Geeks may favour Google, but ordinary consumers don't care for arguments over openness and will buy on price.

Tesco said "affordability" was the key reason for the rise in Android phone sales.

Apple looks set to continue making more money from its smartphones than the likes of HTC, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and co. will, keeping it toward the top of the vendor charts even if its sales volumes fall below that of Android as a whole.

Still, every little helps, eh? ®
