LG touts glasses-free 3D smartphone

Optimus line goes stereoscopic

LG will show off a 3D-capable mobile phone at this month's Mobile World Congress show, the Korean company has teased.

It's saying little more about the smartphone than its name - the LG Optimus 3D - and that it will sport a pair of cameras on the back for 3D photography.

Stereoscopic content, whether downloaded or shot yourself, appears on the "glasses-free" display on the front of the smartphone. It'll be a lenticular screen of the kind used on compact 3D cameras and the upcoming Nintendo 3DS. They work, but you really have look at it straight on to see the effect.

LG also said the Optimus 3D would sport HDMI output and the ability to pull on content from local DLNA servers.

It didn't mention the handset's chippery, but it's a fair bet that it will contain Nvidia's upcoming Tegra 3D, a variant of the Tegra 2 that supports stereoscopic output. Likewise, it's a near certainty that the new Optimus will run Android. ®
