O2 shocks customers by slashing iPad data allowance

What promotional period?

Network provider O2 told customers this week that some iPad data allowances will be cut by up to two thirds from next month.

The news that a brace of current deals were for a promotional time period only caught many customers unawares, and some are switching telcos as a result.

Customers currently paying £15 a month for 3GB of data will now get 2GB, while those paying £2 a day for 500MB will see their allowance drop to 200MB a day.

When the deals were launched in May, there was no mention of any promotional time period.

O2 decided to move the goal posts in June and updated its webpage with the new tariffs, but apparently failed to notify those already signed up that the deals had changed.

These deals are 30-day rolling contracts, so O2 can lawfully make changes at the start of each month. Those unaware of the changes are still automatically charged though and you'd expect O2 to have informed such customers when the changes were first implemented.

A spokesperson from O2 said:

“When we announced new data pricing in June we aligned all tariffs to make them clear and transparent for all our customers. Since then, previous allowances have been shown as a promotion on our website. The vast majority of iPad customers are using under 2 GB per month and will not be affected by this change. Those who are can purchase more data if they wish."

There's nothing transparent about what "aligning all tariffs" even means, but one thing is clear, many customers who signed up in May weren't aware and aren't happy. ®
