Apple unleashes four dozen free Snow Leopard fixes

Tiger loses out

Apple has released an update to Mac OS 10.6, aka Snow Leopard, that aims to fix issues with QuickTime X, OpenGL, Windows compatibility, printer and USB-device problems and more.

The update, version 10.6.3, is now available through Software Update, or can be downloaded here.

A full listing of the 48 updates and bug-fixes in 10.6.3 that, in Apple's words, "enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac" can be found here. Apple highlights the following items in Software Update's information pane:

  • Improvement in the reliability and compatibility of QuickTime X.
  • Compatibility issues with OpenGL-based applications addressed.
  • An issue that causes background message colors to display incorrectly in Mail addressed.
  • An issue that prevented files with the # or & characters in their names from opening in Rosetta applications resolved.
  • An issue that prevented files from copying to Windows file servers resolved.
  • Performance of Logic Pro 9 and Main Stage 2 improved when running in 64-bit mode.
  • Sleep and wake reliability improved when using Bonjour wake on demand.
  • A color issue in iMovie with HD content addressed.
  • Improved printing reliability.
  • Issues with recurring events in iCal when connected to an Exchange server resolved.
  • Improved reliability of 3rd party USB input devices.
  • Fix glowing, stuck, or dark pixels when viewing video from the iMac (Late 2009) built-in iSight camera.

In addition to the garden-variety Mac OS X Snow Leopard update, Apple has also posted a 10.6.3 update for Snow Leopard Server, plus security updates for Mac OS X Leopard and Leopard Server, both for versions 10.5.8.

You can find more information about the security updates here, where you'll notice that if you're still running either the client or server version of Mac OS 10.4, aka Tiger, you're out of luck as far as security updates go. Your operating system appears to no longer be in the update queue.

As usual, the size of your update will vary by the type of Mac you have and on the update state of its version of Mac OS 10.6. On our Mac Pro running Mac OS 10.6.2, the update weighed in at 437.2MB. Apple has also made available a 784MB Combo update, which is to be used if you haven't already updated to 10.6.2, which was released last November.

Our update to our Mac Pro went without a hitch, but we'll keep an eye on such trouble-reporting sites as MacInTouch and Apple's own support forums to see if anyone wasn't as fortunate as The Reg. ®
