Apple iPad to get OLED screen

But launch delayed as a consequence, claims mole

Apple's much anticipated iPad won't appear until the second half of 2010 - but at least the delayed model will come with a 9.7in OLED display rather than an LCD.

So claims a mole within Taiwan's contract manufacturer community, according to a DigiTimes report. The OLED panel will be coming from LG, apparently.

LG signed a $500m display supply deal with Apple in 2008, but there's no indication that it included anything other than LCDs. Past rumours have had it that Apple's getting 15in OLED panels off of LG. At the time, it was said these were for notebooks, but that seems no more likely now than back then.

The latest source of speculation also talks about two iTablets, the second sporting a 10.6in LCD screen, which is interesting given past rumours about two devices: one a big iPod, the other a tablet Mac.

The mole also estimated that, given OLED panel pricing, the 9.7in iPad will retail for around $2000, which, if true, will make the machine a tricky sell even for Apple. It also means the LCD model would substantially cheaper than the smaller one, which is a recipe for consumer confusion.

Then again, Apple's no stranger to taking a risk on crazily expensive kit if the pricey components give the product a sheen that no other has. ®
