Remember the G10IL HSDPA and HSUPA sub-notebook Taiwanese manufacturer ECS cautiously showed at Mobile World Congress last month? Register Hardware snapped the "pre-commercial" machine (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/02/13/mwc_ecs_super_3g_laptop/), seeing it as a sexy alternative to Asus' elfin Eee PC.
ECS' G10IL: 'super 3G' sub-notebook
Now ECS has come out with details of the machine's other specs, and - yes - it's clear it too has the Eee in mind. The G10IL will be based on Intel's Atom processor, sport a choice of glossy 8.2in or 10.2in display, feature a solid-state drive and run Linux.
As it is with the screen size, ECS is hedging its bets with some choices. If Linux is too leftfield for you, ECS will sell you a G10IL with Windows XP pre-installed, just as Asus will with the upcoming 8.9in Eee PC 900 (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/03/04/asus_eee_900_surfaces/).
Not sure a solid-state disk is quite as good as you might have heard? Fear not, ECS will offer G10ILs with hard drives instead. Again, that's a move Asus has said it will make (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/03/10/asus_ceo_on_eee_future/) later this year.
Glossy screen, slick look
ECS said the G10IL will use Intel's 945GSE chipset and pack in up to 2GB of memory. It has one memory slot, the company said, but it's not yet clear whether some Ram is soldered in, as it is on the Eee PC 4G, or the slot takes the lot.
ECS didn't address the G10IL's storage capacity or chip speeds, but the 26 x 18 x 2.9cm machine will come with a four-cell battery - ECS mentions a six-cell power pack too, probably optional - and integrates a 1.3-megapixel webcam into the screen surround.
As we saw on the pre-release model, the laptop has three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and a 56Kb/s modem. To that we can add Wi-Fi and Bluetooth - as we suspected - and a four-in-one card reader, all now confirmed by ECS.
What it hasn't said is when the G10IL will be released or how much the machine will cost when it is.
