MySQL goes a bundle with Business Objects

Challenging Microsoft on BI-database price

MySQL and BusinessObjects are to flog three business intelligence (BI) bundles combining products from both companies.

The small, medium and large customer bundles wrap up the open source MySQL database with Business Objects' Crystal Reports and BusinessObjects Data Integrator, for the generation of reports and for data integration.

The companies aim to deliver integrated business intelligence and database at a "fraction of the cost" of traditional, proprietary databases. Pricing starts at $4,000.

The companies should attract the interests of enterprises running Unix or turning to Linux – the latter move challenging Oracle, which has had strong growth on Linux - but they are likely to find strong initial appeal among medium businesses and departmental users.

The recent release of version 5.0, MySQL's most advanced edition of its database, featured enterprise staples such as stored procedures, but the software is regarded as lacking the experience needed to run mission-critical data processing and BI demanded by enterprise customers currently running Oracle and IBM's DB2.

Medium businesses and departments, though, are keen to tap BI without paying the hefty price normally associated with such products. This pits MySQL and Business Objects against Microsoft, which has established SQL Server through price and bundled functionality as a firm favorite with mid-market and department-level users.

MySQL and Business Objects appear to be matching or beating SQL Server on price.

Last April they got together to embed MySQL with BusinessObjects XI for use on Linux and Unix. ®
